He saw three suns outside the viewports, although the mission data insisted there was only one. Commander Alix Merrin pressed her gloved hand to the transparent alloy, the heat sensors embedded in her palm registering 7.2% above engineered tolerance. She watched the star—HD 1047, their contract referred to it as—seethe with nuclear promise, a roiling cauldron of fusion the color of sundered copper. The two phantom stars blinked and slid out of phase as she exhaled, her nervous system lagging behind the ship's reality. "Drifting again, Commander?" Chief Engineer Luka Han's voice stabbed through her neural link, the modulation flat but his irritation precise. He stood hunched over the reactor control slab—left shoulder higher than right, as if perpetually braced for impact. His wiry hands danced over the touchplate, recalibrating the mag-conduit lattice for the tenth time since shift change. He didn't bother to look up.
